Here at Nikkou Store, our mission is to minimise our environmental footprint and maximise our positive social impact by supporting Australian & New Zealand brands. We believe it's the small things we do each and everyday which make the biggest differences.

Some initiatives we've applied in our stores and office are:

  • Your online goodies will be posted to you in biodegradable and recycled postage bags which greatly reduce our plastic use.
  • Stock transfers between our stores are sent in reusable and compostable or recycled boxes.
  • We keep our stock quantities to a minimum when ordering for our stores and work closely with our suppliers to invest in special pieces and not support mass production.
  • The majority of our brands in store are Australian & New Zealand labels led by women.
  • We have a passion for upcycling and giving clothes a second life. We have driven this initiative through our Market Days. We want to encourage our community to not throw away their pieces, instead find new ways of recycling the old while still bringing in the new.

Our Brands

A large part of our environmental ethos with sustainability is collaborating with brands that are like minded and are committed to sustainable choices within their business. All brands stocked at Nikkou Store are either Australian or New Zealand led by women - and have a strong focus on both sustainable and ethical production.

Here are our top green brands building the foundations toward a sustainable future whilst reducing their carbon footprint. You can feel confident when you purchase at Nikkou Store knowing we are investing in high quality pieces that are also kind to our planet.

Al.ive Body

Al.ive Body's Australian made hand & body range combines product purity with designer aesthetics to stimulate your senses & shape your surroundings. Harnessing the power of essential oils and native botanical extracts, the naturally-derived al.ive body range is 100% palm-oil free, vegan and never tested on animals. Plus, they'll plant an Australian tree for every baby product you buy, to help our planet thrive.

One Tree Planted Strategy

For all Al.ive Body baby products purchased, either on our website or via one of our stockists, we’ll plant a tree in Australia to help the planet thrive. Trees improve air quality, conserve water, preserve soil and support all life on earth by absorbing carbon dioxide and giving out the oxygen we breathe. No wonder they’re called ‘the lungs of the earth’ – we are alive because of them. Al.ive have partnered with amazing environmental charity One Tree Planted to seed a forest of trees in Australia. It’s a small, simple act, but an important one.

Recycling Commitment

As a company we are committed to reducing waste with the al.ive body range and to raise awareness of recycling. Our bottles are 100% recyclable, and our refill pouches enable you to top them up and save 88% plastic. Our bottles are designed to adorn your space, not to end up in landfill or the ocean.

Ingredient Integrity

We’ve invested considerable resources to ensure the integrity of our naturally-derived formulations. Containing no SLS/SLES or parabens, our products are 100% palm-oil free and never tested on animals.

Flash Jewellery

Flash Jewellery's aim is to create responsibly, produce ethically & practice responsible processes. Flash Jewellery is committed to minimising and improving our environmental impact. We’re not perfect but we are continuously working towards being better - progress, not perfection.

Buy Back Scheme

Implemented in May 2021, the Flash Buy-Back scheme allows Flash to close the loop; recycling/upcycling unwanted jewellery, giving these metals a second life and ensuring nothing is disregarded or ends up in landfill. Any pieces they receive back under our ‘buy-back’ scheme, will be sent back to the manufacturer to be melted down, purified and recycled, ready for a second life and recreated into objects, art or jewellery. This scheme has been designed to ensure they continue to embrace sustainable practices & products, reducing their impact on the environment to their very best extent.

HQ Byron Bay

Flash's Byron Bay studio, warehouse, showroom and office is solar-powered & they participate actively in recycling  spent materials to reduce  input into landfill. They consciously make decisions in their day to day operations that will minimise their environmental footprint, wherever possible.

Environmental Policy

Flash Jewellery is committed to minimising and improving their environmental impact.

They aim to limit water usage wherever possible; from ensuring taps are completely turned off to capturing rainwater to water the office plants; water is a precious commodity and an essential condition for life. Flash's manufacturers capture rainwater and utilise this recycled water back into their manufacturing processes. All of their manufacturers have an Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) within their factory, which removes any hazardous chemicals from leftover wastewater.

As a business, Flash are continually looking at ways to reduce their waste & minimise landfill contribution. Their biggest challenge as a business is to be plastic-free. They are looking to eliminate plastic from all processes in HQ, and are trying to find alternatives to small zip-lock bags due to a multitude of reasons, including exporting and customs and storage. This has been a huge hurdle to overcome, so we are beyond excited in 2022 to be receiving the first shipment of our jewellery packed in new cornstarch bags that are 100% biodegradable and can be composted.

It is Flash's responsibility as a sustainable business to consider the carbon footprint of their operations. The best way they can support the reduction of emissions in their industry is to supply a conscious, sustainable product. By nominating the use of recycled metals and gemstones, Flash are helping to reduce the carbon footprint of their designs by eliminating the further mining of the earth’s resources. We have the goal to become a carbon-neutral company by 2023.

As a brand who aims to tread lightly and consciously on this earth, Marle have quietly been giving back through various initiatives and partnerships since inception. Marle work with i=Change and donate to the following.

End Violence Against Women

Every dollar helps Papua New Guinean women rebuild their lives and live free of violence. In the highlands of PNG, women experience violence regularly. Many are beaten on a daily basis. Sexual harassment is also extremely common in markets, where women's ability to do business is crucial for the strength of their communities. When women are safe from violence, entire communities and economies flourish.

Provide a Safe Birth

$30 buys a Baby Bundle to ensure safe childbirth.  Send Hope Not Flowers works with Australian Dr. Barry Kirby in remote Milne Bay Province, PNG. We gift families with a Baby Bundle to incentivise mothers to come to a health clinic to give birth. The bundle is filled with basic supplies for mother and baby - and includes the $5 cost for delivery at the clinic. The Baby Bundle project is directly responsible for a 78% decrease in the maternal death rate in the region

Clean the Sea

$ 1 removes 1.2kg of plastic and debris from the sea. Over 160 million tons of plastic is produced each year to create single-use disposable items and packaging. With no established system to close the loop, this has led to over 70 years of accumulation of plastics in landfill (40%) and the environment (32%), with only 10% being recycled. Seabin Smart Tech, similar to a rubbish bin X pool skimmer, removes floating plastics as small as 2mm, filtering 600,000L of water per day from oil and surface pollutants.

Zulu & Zephyr

Zulu & Zephyr is committed to being the best brand it can be for our team, our extended workers, associated suppliers and our customers.

Zulu & Zephyr Econyl

Zulu & Zephyr's entire Signature swim and their Mini swim collections re-launched using ECONYL® in 2020. Featuring the classic ribbed lycra synonymous with Zulu & Zephyr, exclusively developed in premium, regenerated nylon. Made from ECONYL® Rib outer and lined in premium weight ECONYL® lining. ECONYL® represents 100% of our fabric usage for Signature & Mini swim collections.

ECONYL® yarn is made through a revolutionary process of recovering fishing nets and other nylon waste otherwise polluting the Earth from all over the world that then gets regenerated into its original, pure nylon form. Using a recycled material reduces waste and pollution in the environment but also cuts down the need for raw materials & crude oil used in the production of nylon.

Zulu & Zephyr GOTS Certified Organic Cotton

Choosing GOTS certified organic cotton ensures Zulu & Zephyr are aligned with the three pillars of sustainability; environmental, social and economic. Organic cotton is a more sustainable choice for a myriad of reasons. While conventional cotton is grown using pesticides and chemicals which degrade the soil, reducing the fertility of the land, organic agriculture has a positive, restorative effect. Through chemical-free farming practices, growers can enrich the land creating healthy, carbon-rich soils which require less water and mainly relies on rainwater.

Zulu & Zephyr Packaging

Zulu & Zephyr goods now travel from their makers to you in their biodegradable, corn starch garment bags that are home compostable. Switching from plastic poly bags to a biodegradable alternative has been a big step in eliminating plastic from their sampling & production process. All online orders are packaged in 100% recycled eco mailers that are compostable or recyclable.
